Mixed-language phrases to build your vocabulary
You want to learn:
This website uses a mixed-language approach to teaching vocabulary. I hope you will find it fun and effective, and be motivated to learn how to use the words you have learned correctly in your target language.
For example, if you are learning Spanish, we might start by having you guess the meaning of the word 'perro' like this:
I hear the barking of a perro.
This is called a cue phrase.
After a few more new words, click on 'test me' to see if you remember what ''perro'' meant by seeing it in an ambiguous phrase like ''I love my pet perro''
and review the word by seeing the original phrase with a blank space, e.g.I hear the barking of a ____
Pure phrases, when they are available, will be simple phrases all in your target language.
Q: Can I learn a whole language with this website?
A: No. At the moment LanguageRabbit.com is focussed on teaching vocabulary and simple phrases you can use with it, because this can be done quickly for many languages. In the future we'd like to provide complete courses, but each language requires its own course and this takes much more time.
Q: Why is audio not available for all languages?
A: We use your browser's speech synthesis function, so voices available depend on your device and browser. To get more voices you may be able to install a language pack on your device.
Q: How are you funded?
A: At the moment the site just in a testing phase and hosting is not too expensive. In the future we may include a small amount of advertising and a way to donate. We hope to keep all content freely available to everyone.
